Ceramic floral wall decoration by Ruscha

Ruscha is famed for some key developments in West German pottery including the development of the vulcano glaze which marked a move towards thick dripping fat lava glaze (1951 – Otto Gerharz) and the production of probably the most famous form, the 313 designed by Kurt Tschorner.

Rudolf Schardt took over the West German factory founded by his father Georg Schardt and renamed the company "Ruscha". It was known for its innovative shapes and 'Fat Lava' glazes. Cilli Wörsdörfer was responsible for the art pottery department in the 1950s and was famous for her handpainted designs including "Milano" and "Zebra". Otto Gerharz was production director from 1951 and devised the "Vulkano" glaze. Kurt Tschörner created most of the shapes. Other notable designers were Ernst Borens, Hans Welling and Adele Bolz. The company became part of the Scheurich group after 1996.
